Which Dog Fits Best In A Prominent Family Household Of 6: West Highland White Terrier -or- Toy Poodle?

No offense but does being a “prominent family” mean you have to have a certain type of dog that is “acceptable” to your friends and acquaintances?
It should be what breed of dog best fits your lifestyle and activities. If it is going to be a “see what kind of dog I own” thing, please do not get a dog. They are not commodities or the latest fad. Just because Paris Hilton (or whoever) has a (fill in the breed)___________ dog, doesn’t make it the “thing” to have. Dogs are a lifetime responsibility. Are you prepared for a 10 to 15 year commitment? Vet bills, grooming, boarding if you go out of town? Please do the research on whatever breed you might get to see if the dog matches what you want in a pet/companion.

depends on the ages of the people in the household.
A westie would probably be a better fit, so long as it was properly raised. They’re sturdier little dogs and less yappy.

What does being prominent have to do with getting a dog? My male Westie doesn’t do well with toddlers “in his face”, I have both a male and female. The male is friendly and fine with older children who aren’t teasing him, when the young grandchilden visit he stays in the spare room. The female is fine with the toddlers, she’s small, very active, needs to be included in all family activities and a lap dog. This is my first experience with Terriers and I wouldn’t hesitate to get another.

If you have very young children, will you be able to watch the kids around the puppy ALL the time?
Who gets the boot if your child hurts the pup and the pup bites back to protect itself.
I think at present your household is busy enough without adding another baby to the mix. And that is what puppies are. Babies.

Probably the terrier- they’re a lot more excited and social.
The toy poodles might get overwhelmed with all the people going all different places.
With all the people- (i know this isn’t the question but,) divide up all the responsibilities you can think of with caring for the dog- so no one is left to everything and everyone gets to spend time with the dog.
