What’s The Best Way To Stop My Puppy From Crying At Night?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
He sleeps in my room and has puppy training pads in there too, he wakes me up when he does the toilet which is fine but sometimes he wakes me up for now reason. Do i comfort him or ignore him or tell him No? He’s 8 weeks old, a westie cross bichon. Thank you

8 weeks is very young to get any realistic response to housetraining. My pup is 17 weeks old and we are getting there at last. She sleeps in the bedroom too (on the bed she never pees on the bed as she thinks its her “basket”) its easier as I have people coming and going in the early hours and the dogs can be stopped from barking.
To start with I took her out for a pee in the early hours if I noticed her stirring, squeaking etc. I don’t use training pads or newspaper on the floor seems odd to “encourage” the dog to pee inside when really you want them to pee outside.
It took 2 weeks of me getting up at 5am and waiting while she peed outside but then she got the hang of it and sleeps through from 11pm to 7ish. If she stirs around 5 or 6am I ignore her and she goes back to sleep mostly. If she really squeaks a lot I get up and let her outside.
Our other 2 dogs sleep in the bedroom most nights and slept on the bed when they were young, they liked to feel close to us, one of the “pack” so to speak. Now they are older they’ve got proper dog beds to sleep in on the floor and the pup will have one eventually but for now I value my sleep and she is a contented happy dog who has never peed in the bedroom or on the bed.
You have to ignore him. My first suggestion would be to put him in a small dog crate NOT in your room. If you have to, put him in the basement. I would cover the crate with a blanket that way he can’t see out it and see whats going on. By putting a dog in a crate, they don’t want to pee or poop in there, because then it would get on them, its an easy way to potty train. He will though pee in there most likely once, sometimes more if he’s a slow learner (which is fine). So if you want, you can put a little grate in there, like a cookie cooler pan, that way if he does pee, its at the bottom of the crate, and give him a towel too.
Its commonly misunderstood that puppies can’t hold their bladder, but they can all night while you sleep.
He’s going to whine, in his crate, but you have to leave him alone. By going to comfort him, you are just teaching him that whining gets what he wants, and that’s certainly not what you want. The first night will be tough, but the second night should be better, and by the third night he should be fine. Once he’s comfortable you can bring him into your room. If it were me, i wouldn’t even get up to let him go to the bathroom, trust me he can hold it until you wake up in the morning.
He would probably feel more secure in a crate and it will be a lot easier to house train him too. Having the puppy pads there is only encouraging him to go in the house. He is a baby and is most likely waking you up to get attention. Once you crate him and he has been taken out, then you can ignore him a little so he can go back to sleep. He is too young to do that now, but you should be able to in a few more weeks.
Ignore it unless he needs to go out, they grow out of that. The best way to potty train a god is to crate train, cut the water off 2 or 3 hours before bed and let out before bed. So when hes crying you know that he just wants to be with you. When you get the crate training under control then let him sleep in the bedroom. My recommendation is to buy a pair of ear plugs.
Give him an old jumper or something that smells of you & put it in his bed to snuggle with. Try & ignore him it won’t be easy but he has to learn that you are busy sometimes. He is only a baby & will adjust slowly. Love him lots, play lots as he grows so will his bladder control.
If he wakes you up at night, you should take him out- he is trying to house train himself and is telling you he needs to go out. It wouldn’t hurt to comfort him, but he should learn that waking you up means he needs to go out.
I do not understand the puppy/pad training thing. Why teach your dog to potty in your house?
WHen your dog wakes you up at night take him to go OUT and pee.
Dogs should sleep in a kennel, not in your bed.
aww your puppy crys awwwww
well if i was you let him sleep next to you for a few nigth hold him close to u and say stuff to him like good boy and stuff like that let me know if it works mail me
A well wrapped up hot water bottle may be comforting enough to keep him settled, as he probably still expects to be with his mum.
If he wakes you up for no reason lie in bed and tell him no.
my vet told me to just take my puppy out to potty make it boring then put her back and ignore her if she still crys
