What Is The Best Way To Potty Train My Westie?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I am having a hard time potty training my Westie pup. We try to take him out every half and hour but it seems as though he goes outside and then comes in and pees on the carpet 10 mins later. There is no way he has to go that much! We are working on other commands right now so he doesn’t really come to us very well. It’s hard to have him walk to the door to go out. I usually pick him up and carry him outside. I think this may be hurting his learning.
Does anyone have any advice on how to house break my pup sooner?

I dont have a Westie, but, we kennel trained both of our dogs at night. Now, during the day, everytime the pup starts sniffing around, take him out saying , “Good boy, lets go potty!”, when he does it outside, praise him VERY much, pet him and tell him what a good boy you went potty!! If anyone ever heard me with a pup they’d think I was silly but the more praise you give, the more they want to please you. When he does it in the house, say “no, lets so potty outside”….a firm NO, then take him right outside. he will eventually get to know that door is what he goes to and outside is where he should potty………patience and perseverance is key. I’ve had several pups, all different breeds over the yrs. They are all as different as people.
Even very small, I put them on a leash, taking them outside and giving those commands. Honestly, our 7 yr. old Mini Schnauzer will “go” on command…..just pee, but, when you’re on vacation at a rest stop and its cold…..you’ll be very glad you taught him! It was just from taking him out over and over and saying “Toby, potty!” every time. Hang in there, he’ll get the message!
Oh, and I put “potty train Westie” in the search engine and here was one of the sites:http://www.westieclubamerica.com/behavio…
I would try crate training. You can leave your pup to rest and take him out every hour or so during the day, as well as after meal times, play times and when he just woke up. And if you see him walking around sniffing the floor.
A dog will not go to the toilet in his own space. So as long as your pups crate is not too big for him and you take him out often, you should be fine. He will come to love his crate. They are like little dens for dogs.
Good Luck!
you can buy pee pee paids at a store easy to train.
what i did with my dog you keep him in a room closest to the door and when you start to see him go pick him/her up and bring her outside. untill they learn to use the bathroom outside then once they learn to go outside you let them around the house. it sounds mean but its the only effective way to train your dog
get potty pads and praise for going on them and for going outside NEVER scold for going inside
Put him on a lead and take him out to the place you want him to go whatever the weather, whatever the time, wait quietly ( no chatting to him, he doesn’t understand human language, you will just confuse him) and when he goes put a word to it like ‘be clean’ ( dogs will learn up to 300 words in the language the hear most often- so don’t waste words) and praise him, that way you are teaching the dog to go on command in the place you want.
Unless of course he doesn’t feel safe in the spot you have decided he must go.
Needs toileting on waking, after food and after play and at first take him out every hour. Should happen within a week if you are consistent , patient and stick to one method.
A cup full of water with 25% bleach in it will replicate the amnoia in urine and he is likely to pee on it thinking he is covering anothers dogs pee. I have a large stone which I tip this on ( to clean it) and all the male dogs pee there.
