What Can I Do To Stop My Westie From Going On The Floor At Night?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
He is house trained and has been for over a year. My 11yr old insists on having him in the bed with her but doesn’t respond when he wakes her to take him out. Instead of waking me he either goes on her floor or in my little one’s room. Normally if I’m awakened by the jingle of his tags its too late. I’ve found that when I simply tell him “no pee-ing on the floor” in a stern tone he won’t do it. He reverts right back to it if I don’t “speak” to him about it nightly.
I don’t know if I’m fortunate or unfortunate that he is really smart. Is there anything I can do besides crate him at night?

How late are you letting him drink water? I would take it away from him a few hours before bed. Make sure you walk him really well, or better yet, have your 11yr old do it before she goes to bed.
We raise great danes, and all of our puppies are not allowed to have anything to drink after 7pm at night. We walk them for a last walk around 9pm and so far, so good….no middle of the night accidents.
Other than that, I would keep him in a bathroom or kitchen during the night, so if he is going to have an accident, it’s at least on vinyl.
Good luck!
Pick up his water around 7 pm at night and make sure he gets outside a lot before bedtime. It should help but if it continues then he needs to be crated and not in your 11 year olds room, they sleep so soundly that he wont’ wake up and are you really going to rely on an 11 year old to take the dog out at night? No that should be your responsibility so put the dog in your room.
I would suggest trying those puppy training pads, just lay one down it her room somewhere where he is able to get to it, that way if he has to go he will have somewhere to go that you can just throw away in the morning.
Simple….CRATE it!!!!
duh
If you can’t stand to just tell the kid “No.”-crate it in the bedroom.
cut his fluids off around 6 or 7 pm, take him out right before going to bed
