West Highland Terrier White Periods?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
Hi
Can anyone help?…just bought a 4yr old Westie yesterday and had her out for a 2mile walk today, she both urinated(5times!) and fouled. It was just the last time she urinated – I noticed there seemed to be alot of blood?….is it her period, or what?
This is my first dog!
Thanks for your help!

yes it probably was, it is usual for a dog to wee a lot so don’t worry, no offence but I think you should have done more research before getting a dog, maybe get a book or something to help, by the way dogs don’t have periods they are in season!, good luck xxxx
could be that she is in season, but would definately get her checked out by the vet straight away
Hi – the blood loss may be a sign that your Westie is in season – in which case watch out for male dogs wishing to father her pups! It may also be a sign of a bladder infection, especially if she is weeing a lot. I think it would be a really good idea for you to take her to the vets for a complete check up – for fleas, worms, injections and general advice – you may want to consider having her neutered so that she no longer has regular ‘bleeds’ and will not have unwanted attentions from male dogs – or unwanted pups!
Since this is your first dog. Let me explain a few things. First dogs don’t have periods, they go in to HEAT or Estrus. It is the opposite of a period. Periods are a result of pregnancy NOT taking place (in humans) and Estrus is preparing the Uterus to except pregnancy. You need to take the dog to a vet. It sounds more like a UTI (urinary tract infection) than estrus. Either way you need to see if she has been spayed or not. If not, get it done. You don’t want to deal with all that mess anyway. Good Luck with your new dog. I hope this helped. If I can help you any further please feel free to email me.
awww shes in heat…take her to the vet and get spayed otherwise you will have alot of dogs on your door step xx
Is this dog not spayed? At four she should be. If not, she could be in heat. If you are concerned take her to a vet and you should have researched dogs before becoming an owner.
If she is in heat, do not take her for walks if you live in a city or town. Many places have bylaws against walking dogs in heat. Check you local bylaws.
Blood in the urine is different from when they bleed during heat. If she is in heat then you will notice blood every where she has been. Is the dog fixed? If so then she would not go into heat and bleed. Is she is not fixed get her fixed and then you will not have to deal with her being in heat. If it is just in her urine then that can the sign of a major health problem, and you should bring her to the vet.
Dogs don’t have periods.
Hi there, I have a westie but he is a male. He urinates a lot and fouls when he is out. All dogs do rather than foul their area. The number of times she urinates is fine, sometimes nothing comes out, she is just marking territory. Did you not ask if she was nutured or not i.e. whether she can breed or not? That is important. I hope you bought her from a reputable dealer so that she was not passed onto you with health issues. I would call whoever who purchased her from to find out a: has she been nutured, b: had they noticed if she had health problems and do they have her veterinary attendance log? At four years, she should have a veterinary log with all her jabs etc. and application/purchase of frontline for fleas and ticks etc. You could then visit the vet and get her checked out. Make sure you take out pet insurance asap – if she has medical problems it will cost you a lot!
I hope this helps. By the way, westies are great fun so I hope all goes well and that you begin to have good times together.
did it come from her anal glads or did it come from the other bit if it did come from that bit then i would say it is she is 4 is that rigth then it will be her season which is natrul do you no if she has been spayed if she has then she wont have a season but if it came out of her anal part she migth have strained to got to the toilet but you said she went for a wee alot that sounds to me that she is defentily on her season it will last for about 3 weeks in totals as they are in season for 2 weeks but after that they can still take a dog up to a week after that but i wouldnt worry as it defetionly sounds like she is in season hope this helps
