and we’re thinking of getting another dog, which ones would you suggest? we wouldn’t like one bigger than him as he would feel inferior, and we wouldn’t want that. :P
we realise that it is a struggle to care for one dog, let alone another, but we are fully prepared, all i’d like is some suggestions.
thanks! :D

I have a 4 year old westie, and have just got another who is now 14 weeks old. It was a little difficfult to begin with as he kept jumping on her and wanting to play, he also thought she might feed him which she was having none of that.
Now they are like the best of friends and love playing together in the garden. Dogs are adaptable and they soon get used to oneanother.
    Good Luck

    why not another westie?
Go to the shelter, there are tons of little dogs. Size doesn’t always make another dog feel inferior. A little dog with the alpha personality could make your dog feel inferior. It’s not the size tat is the problem. I have all different size dogs and its is the personality. I would say go to the shelter, get an older dog because sometimes older dogs do not like puppies and then since the dog will be older you can see what personality it has so you can better match that with your current dog. You can also take your westie with you to see how they get along.
Just think of the wonderful thing you would do going to shelter.

There is only one thing better than having a dog and that’s having two dogs. I don’t think that your dog will feel inferior, even if your new dog becomes dominant.
    Jealousy could become an issue.
Puppies need feeding about four times every day and they need lots of sleep. When a new puppy comes to me, I split the other dogs food into four portions and fed the older dogs every time that I fed the puppy.
Your five year old will not want a puppy jumping on him constantly, consequently you should have a separate room for your puppy to rest. Play with your puppy in the garden and supervise them when they play together. If your puppy gets cheeky with your Westie and it objects, NEVER tell your Westie off for this. Let your Westie sort this out, otherwise you could create friction.
When you puppy is resting in its own room, play with your Westie and give it lots of attention. Your friends will want to see your new puppy and this is excellent for its socialisation, however make sure that you put your puppy in another room before they come in YOUR WESTIE MUST BE MADE A FUSS OF before they make a fuss of your puppy.
Try to be available almost all of the time for the next two weeks, this will help your puppy to settle and start his potty training.

I don’t think the size of the other dog will be a problem. I have a medium sized dog, and when our little dog friends come to visit, they push him around.
Get a puppy from the pound, and let them become accustomed to each other right from the first day, and they will work out their own hierarchy. You do not say how well socialized your dog is. Is he very used to playing with other dogs, does he meet new dogs on a regular basis, does he get on well with the new dogs he meets? If he doesn’t, I would take your westie to obedience class to help him with his socialization.

With our dogs size doesn’t matter, it personality, try a rescue an adult that trained will make you life easier, you pick ou a couple you like and bring yours to meet, most rescues want you to do that, and if you are thinking of a specific breed go to a rescue, I have greyhounds, and you can also get a pure breed for a rescue I found a great Black Lab at the SPCA, just went up to see how the dogs were treated, had some bad thing in the news about our local one, found death row and Annie, she was 8 owners thought she was to od to invest any money in her by going to the Vet, I’ve had her 2 yrs now, she’s beautiful, not one accident in the house, chews nothing, loves life, I got 3 PERFECT dogs thru rescue, try it

if it a struggle looking after one dog, why on earth do you want another. dont do it. there could be more problems and expense than you can afford both to live with and pay for.watch the DOG WHISPERER on channel eleven freeview. six pm to seven pm uk. dogs do not need a companion, only you, if you are PACK LEADER , ok, but are you??

We have a westie and have just become the proud owners of a cocker spaniel although they were a bit wary at first they are now the best of friends and when our westie goes for a hair cut the cocker goes too as they pine. great fun!I think westies are very adapt with change and soon show other dogs they are the boss no matter how much bigger the other dog is,

I’m sure your westie has enough personality not to feel inferior to ANY dog!! I new a police dog handler whose ‘other’ dog was a westie and the westie ruled. If you have thought it through (sounds as though you have) go for it and good luck!

we had a westie meg when i was growing up, we then got a golden retriever puppy , as it was a puppy meg seem to be the dominate dog or the alpha female if ya like, so if you are thinking about another dog it may be a good idea to buy a pup!!

  11. shirley v says:

get him one the same size as him from a rescue as they have lots of dogs needing good homes and a spaded female would be fine
