Should I Get Rid Of My Dog?

My 5 year old wirehaired dachshund has kept me up at night with his incessant barking, for the absolute last time. He escapes out of the back yard (cant chain him up, he breaks the sprinkler heads) and runs wild all over the neighborhood with his leash still attached. He barked all night and still all morning. He has begun pooping large, loose piles on my carpet. We got a puppy a few months ago (a westie) and they get along ok, but he started this. I cannot stand him any longer and he was my pride and joy… but I cannot afford to get him training and I’m sure they can’t train him for the barking. I have a bark collar, but if I cant catch him to put it on it does me no good.

Man. People are this answer are harsh. Anyway, have you tried crating the dog at night? It sounds like he has the run of the house and yard. Locking him in a carrier that is about 1.5 times his length might help. He probably will not urinate or defecate in such a small space. Keep the crate in your room so that he can see you as he sleeps. That worked for me and a new puppy. Gradually my puppy relaxed and now the full grown dog has the run of the house with no problems. The crate give him a feeling of safeness. For the yard, can you run a dog run above? Attach a wire, like a clothesline from a couple of areas and attach the leash to this. It allows him to run some but not run loose.
Also, they have bark collars that will spray the dog every time he barks. That might help as well. Also, call up some pros. Ask their advice. Most will probably give you some pointers rather than have you take the dog to a shelter.

Sounds like you have already given up on the dog. If he’s barking and doing all this stuff then it is you who failed him, not the other way around. Since you got a “puppy” the other dog is disposable huh?
Well since you didn’t take the time to properly train your dachshund, the westie will end up the same way in a year or two,,,gonna get rid of that one too?
People like you make me sick…

Truthfully its you that can’t train him. NO dog is untrainable and I keep my word on that. There is no dog that a professional dog trainer can’t train. ( Which is why they are called dog trainers) I’m sure you can catch him and get that bark collar on. If you can’t handle him give him to a close relative or friend that you know will work with him and love him.

Sorry, but one does not “get rid” of dogs. One gets rid of garbage. If you are even thinking in this vein, you should surrender your dog to a non-kill shelter where he can find a new home. Having a dog is like having a child and it requires a lot of patience and understanding. If you are not prepared/able to do this, it would be best for both you and the dog to adopt him out.

The problem is that he has never been loved and cared for from the start. He has developed some bad habits. Perhaps it would be a good time to turn him over for adoption.

    Try getting a trainer.
And there are plenty trainers who dont cost THAT much if you look around.
And if you cant even afford a trainer, how can you afford a dog?

any dog can be trained to do anything.
it’s very much evident here that you don’t exercise your dogs sufficiently. you know virtually nothing about dog care. you spent 5 years rearing him in this way, how he turns out now reflects entirely on how he is brought up. you don’t deserve to own any dog until you have read enough books, found out more about dogs.
considering the ignorant state you are in now, don’t make groundless statements like he can’t be trained. you say you can’t affort to get him training, then why did you get a dog in the first place if you can’t afford it? and now you went out and got yourself another pup.
just spells irresponsible. get him another home for goodness sake

Sounds like you have a lot of excuses why you can’t train you dog. If you’re not careful, you’re going to have two dogs with these problems. If your dog is having loose stools, maybe you should find out why. This could be from feeding a crappy diet or a disease process. So maybe talking to your vet would help. You can train this dog. In fact dachshunds are very very intelligent and have a willingness to please. Sounds like you want to get rid of “your pride and joy” for something that can be easily fixed save for a little time and effort. Library cards are free in most communities. Many libraries have a whole row of books and other media on dogs and dog training. If they don’t they can usually get them in through interlibrary loan. Hint hint.

You are wrog. You can train your dog to not bark. Having SOMEONE ELSE train him is not a smart thin to do, try trainin him yourself. Check out a couple of books from the library about training dogs, its nto that hard. As for the escaping, try buying a kennel from the local store, and by kennel here is what i mean. If he is an outdoor dog, et a REAL kennel, a lare pen. If he is indoor, put him in a crate. As for the pooping, this might be a medical issue, so please talk to your vet. I must say, that if you can’t catch him, that is YOUR fault, not the dogs. You have failed to train him correctly, so now you are paying for it. If you really can’t take care of him right, or train him. Please sell him to someone that can, and do likewise with your puppy. Until you can take care of dogs right, don’t get one.
