Should I Get A Creat To Train A Puppy?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I have been told both yes ad no. I’m not going to be home every single min of everyday so do you think I need a crate to put it in so it won’t chew and pee on everything. If you say no/yes please tell me why. Also if i get a westie do you think I would need to take it out more than a larger dog, because of its size? Thanks so much

I think crate training is a good idea.
It’s not only a place where you put your puppy when your gone,
It’s their HOME or DEN. A little area that they know is theirs.http://www.midwesthomes4pets.com/Informa…http://www.sfspca.org/resources/library/…http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…
Some good sites to start you up on crate training.
You will have to take out your puppy often (every 2-3 hours) because they are still puppies. Once your puppy gets older it will be able to ‘hold it’ longer, maybe to around 6-8 hours?
Yes and yes.
Crates are much easier, puppys will not want to toilet their ‘home’ and they provide a place for them to go and sleep/rest etc. It also allows you to put the dog away, helping prevent separation anxiety, and you can keep the dog out of the way if you are cleaning, have guests, have the door open etc.
A westie will need to be taken out more, as it will have a smaller bladder. Every 2 hours, and after every meal, and when it wakes up (even from naps) for the first few days, and you can gradually reduce this. DON’t scold your dog for any accidents, and act like you have won the lottery when it goes outside. When your out, see if you can ask a friend, neighbour, or family member to let it out, play with it, give it attention, and generally check it is ok.
Good luck with your puppy, and have fun with it!
crate training is a good idea, however size doesnt matter as much as age. if you get a young puppy (8-12 weeks) you need to take it 4-5 times a day, an older one (13+ weeks) only needs 2-3 times a day for training. once trained the dog should be able to be a proper house dog and only use the crate when he or she wants.
the pup should be taken out first thing in the morning, after eating, in the afternoon, and before bedtime. the older puppy should be taken out first thing in the morning, after eating, and before bedtime.
whatever times you choose to take out the dog, make a schedule and stick to it! crate training teaches your dog to hold it untill you let it out, but if you take it out at noon everyday it will expect to go at noon, so dont be surprised if you take it out at 3:00 and find an accident in the cage. and older dog (8 months and older) will learn to hold it even longer, but its not healthy.
Yes, the westie will need to be taken out more frequently than a big dog. Small dogs have small bladders.
Crate training is a great idea. Dogs quickly begin to view the crate as “their” den and will go into it even when you don’t lock them up. My dogs sleep in their crates but we don’t make them- we leave the door open so they can come and go as they please. They like their crates as long as they’re allowed frequent exercise.
It makes house training a lot easier… if you can correct the bad behavior right away, your puppy will get house trained a lot faster.

I would recommend a golden retriever, they are great with being home alone. I have one and he stays home everyday for 9 hours without wetting himself. I would recommend a crate for smaller dogs, but bigger dogs can hold it in better.
You will be SO happy to have a crate trained dog. Get one no matter what kind of dog you get.
