are puppy training pads a good idea?
do you put them in the crate or on the floor?
what size would you get for a westie pup? small medium or large?

no pads, it just teaches them to go in the house. you’re just going to have to take it outside every 20 minutes or so, especially after it wakes up, eats or drinks. crate training is ok, just don’t leave a puppy in one all day long. get some baby gates and confine it to the areas you’ll be in so you can keep an eye on it. if it starts to go in the floor say “no” very sternly and take it outside. every time it goes to the bathroom outside praise it and give it a treat. i’ve got an italian greyhound and they’re supposed to be notoriously bad at potty traing, but i used this method and she hasn’t had an accident since she was 6 mo old. good luck.

For me, puppy pads are a complete waste of money. Unless you live in an apartment without immediate access to a garden/outside. Puppies needs to learn the place to pee etc. is outside, not in the house, even on pads or newspaper. From day 1, immediately you bring your puppy home in fact, before you even take him into the house, take him outside to the place you want him to get used to going. Otherwise you simply end up training them to use the pads, and then re-training them to go outside!!
If you must use them, you put them outside the crate.

It depends on your situation as everyopne is different!
I have a 9 yr old male chihuahua, and we live in an apartment, on the 3rd floor. He uses a piddle pad inside, as well as goes outside daily.
The pads are a godsend in bad weather for us.
Crate training is a wonderful way to teach your puppy to ‘go’ outside.
Do not put piddle pads inside the crate! They go outside the crate. Once your pup has learned to ‘go’ on the pad, you can move it closer and closer to the exit door and eventually to the outside. He/she will learn to go outside over time–with alot of praise.
What I did was close off a section of a room to a 2 by 3 foot area. When they are a puppy, they do not need alot of room. Some people even use a playpen.
Anyway; I put the crate (with a blanket inside) in one corner of the sectioned off area. I put his food and water bowls in another corner, and his piddle pad in the 3rd corner. Anytime he/she comes out of the crate, he will have to urinate, so put him right on the pad. Same with after eating. When he ‘goes’ on the pad–give lots of praise/pats/hugs.
Please do not give your pup the ‘run of the house’. It is too much for them–and you can’t be watching them every second for accidents, etc.
Start out small and let them get used to the surroundings–and to learn the ‘ropes’. In time, as the pup grows up, you can expand the size of the area that you sectioned off to half the room.
Puppies need to go every couple of hours. By them sleeping in a crate they learn to ‘hold it’ until they come out of the crate. this teaches them bladder and bowel control. But they cannot be kept in a crate for hours and hours either. I’d say 3-4 hrs at most.
    Oh and puppies sleep ALOT!
I grew up with a Westie–and they are very sweet.
Good luck with your new furkid!

Puppy training pads? That’s what I started my dog on when I first got him, but he is not the smartest and it took him 2 years to learn. However, puppy pads are still a good idea. I put my dog in a ate at first even though I feel bad doing it, because they have a lot of accidents. Medium crate would give him/her more room. I got my pads at Petsmart, I have no idea where else to get them sorry ;[

Don’t waste your money. Puppy pads teach a puppy that it’s OK to pee indoors – then you have to reteach it that it’s not OK!
Train him by taking him outside at least once an hour and everytime he wakes up, after he’s eaten and when he’s been playing. Be patient and consistent and he’ll get there in the end. If you want to put something his his crate, use newspaper.

Hi I used to have a westie (I’m jealous!)
When I got my puppy, I just covered the floor in newspaper and gradually moved pieces away until there was just one left next to the door. I’m not sure with the training pads. x

they are such a waste of time. you only need to use them if you dont have a backyard.
i mean you teach the puppy that its ok to wee and poo inside the house, then you have to teach it to go outside and its wrong to go in the house.

I used good old fashioned newspaper. Much cheaper than training pads and had the same effect.

Argos is the cheapest place I have found, sold in packs of 10, they are approximately 60cm square.
