Potty Train My Dog?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
the problem is he isnt a puppy. He used to be trained but we have moved alot ove rthe last 5 years and now if we leave him out of his cage when we leave he will go to the bathroom. He is usually good when we are home with him, he will wait until we let him out. but we cannot leave him out of his cage when we leave like we used to. He is a westie, about 6 years old. any suggestions?

Many dogs do not look at a crate as a punishment. They like thier den. Most dogs sleep most of the time you are away. I would put him in his crate for the with a kong toy. He will not pee in there. In a month or two you may be able to let him out again. If you just moved to this house he may me trying to get his scent around it. In a few months his scent will be every where and he will feel more secure.
To help him feel more secure in your new home, put a DAP collar on him. A Dog Appeasing Phermone collar will help him to feel more at ease. You may not want to leave this on him in his crate, but you could put it next to the crate when you leave so he still has the scent. Or there is a Comfort Zone spray that you can spray around the crate.
If you have not moved or this can come about suddenly, you may want to take him to the vet. Changes in urination can be the sign of some medical issues.
Sounds more like an abandonment issue. Are you all spending time with him? Taking him for walks everyday? Sounds like he needs some reassurance. You might want to talk to your vet, too, though – just to be on the safe side.
I have a good suggestion! it is called a wee wee pad! Well this is how it works in the day time if some one is always home let him out if he 1. stand by the door 2. is wiggley but that is durring the day! at night you dont want him to cheat so buy a wee wee pad at your local pet store and you should but it out at night were he mostly is and tell him a couple of times ” potty here!” the wee wee pad has a dog pee sent that attracts dogs to pee on it. And if you are to lazy to even train the dog well keep it out all day and night!
I hope I helped i went threw the samething i know this stuff!
