If our kids open front door he is gone. Now we trained him to come and if we are in the house he comes right away and if we are in the backyard e comes right away, but if he is in the front yard he knows he isnt limited by a fence and he will not respond but run farther and faster. we have decided to quit chasing him and he will just stay gone. Help husband is starting to not like this dog.

have you tryed, before you open the door, tell him to sit, and stay, everytime he moves shut the door and tell him 2 sit again and do this untill he learns to stay, worked on our westie who is 12months

train you dog the basic sit and stay command. Everytime you open the door correct the pup right away, don’t let him run away. I know it’s hard but that’s the only way. Puppies just love to play and they think it’s normal, unfortunately they don’t know the consequences. Try to put a board when training the pup, this way even after you open the door he wouldn’t be able to go anywhere. Then train him how to sit and stay, if you think he’s finally getting it then take the board out and continue with the sit and stay command. Reward him when he does good, and correct him when he’s doing something wrong.

Is he neutered? If not it is probably because there is a 8itch in heat in your neighborhood. I suggest getting him neutered in this case. Otherwise he may just be on a puppy streak where nothing you say applies. I suggest teaching your children to check for him when opening the door. Perhaps put a baby gate in your door, so when they open it they have to step over the gate and the dog can’t get out. (This is what I did, as we live right next to the road, and I was taking precautionary measures.)

fisrt of all, contact a trainer.
secondly, if you do not have a fenced in yard with a puppy or un trained dog, it is HIGHLY recommended you leash the dog no matter what to prevent this (your dog might run away for good, or get hit by a car, or stolen, or preggo if she isnt spayed)

This may seem silly but maybe putting a leash on him when the risk of him running out the front door may help to deter that behavior. Or keep him separated in another part of the house so that the front door isn’t an issue (just when you expect the kids to get home from school). I used to keep my dog in the kitchen. If you can afford it, an invisible fence works wonders. In a case where the dog is little and can run fast, you’ll need to “introduce” the fence while dog is on leash. Usually a few times is all enough for them to get the idea. Just a thought.
