My Sister Has A Problem….(10 Easy Points!!)?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
My sister has a westie. He just turned a year old in early December. He has a problem with peeing and sometimes pooing in their house. He will even steal their son’s dirty diapers from the trash and eat the contents(poo) from the diaper. I don’t know much about dogs, so that’s why I come to you guys. She seems to think that if she gets him neutered that will fix his problems and I think she hasn’t trained him right since he was a pup. He also will pee on anyone who comes to their house. (he just does a little trickle-like marking his territory). Who is right? Should she re-evalulate how she is training him or should she get him neutered? (she wanted to stud him out at one point but has decided against this b/c she thinks this will fix the prob)
Thanks!!

The neutering will help the his marking of territory, but won’t help his poop eating problem. For some reason some dogs like to eat poop. For the most part it is normal, but it can also be because of a poor diet (might want to try a better dog food). You are correct that much of this could have been because of a failure to properly potty train him though. I would get him neutered and stick to a stringent crate training process. And advise her against studding him out (I tell you this out of personal experience). Its more trouble than it’s worth and it sounds like she has plenty to deal with right now anyways. Good Luck
BOTH. Better training and fixing. First, we dont need anymore animals right now. People are giving them away left and right. Also, he is marking his territory which will subside with neutering. The pooing is just because he likes it. Just keep the contents like diapers out of his reach, also clean up after him immediately. You can also try a spray bottle method to spray him everytime in the face with water when he starts to go after the poo and eventually it should subside as well. Good luck.
This is due to improper training and having him neutered will not correct it.
She needs to start over with the dog, by crate-training him. He also needs to be taught that the garbage is off-limits.
My dogs are big enough to reach into the garbage can, but even if the lid is open, they do not take anything out of it.
I think it’s a combo of all of the above….neutering may help some, especially with the “marking of the guests”….how awful lol. But, she does have to train him properly as well.
Tell her to get a diaper pail with a locking lid, and be sure to throw all the diapers in there.
The diaper thing….that’s common. My dogs did that, and they love to raid the cat’s litter box. I guess poop smells and tastes irresistable to dogs
westies are a bit dificult when it come to dogs. i havr=e a golden retriever and we started training her the minute we walked through the door. you want to be in control but not over powering. right now the dog is thinking that he is the big bad wolf and everything is his. tell your sister to be more demanding and try to train him more often. and all dogs eat poop. you ust have to get a new trash can that is puppy proof.
Needs to be trained. When he poops, this is kinda gross but it works, pick it up and shove it on his nose. Look at him and tell him no. If nothing works call Victoria Stillwell, you know, the lady from It’s Me Or The Dog.
Unless her dog has titles and is fully health checked — she should NOT stud him out.
She should have had him fixed early on.
Yes, she did not train him properly. He’s being a defiant little bugger, and needs to be re-trained — properly.
he needs to be neutered and she needs to retrain him to go outside. there is a disconnect somewhere with him. this is a behavior problem and the owner is the one who has to change to correct the problem.
Whenever he pees or poos on the carpet, clean it up, take it to it, let him lok at it and give him a still no.
Training! Eating poop does not have anything to do with being unable to have puppies. You’re right. The dog should have been trained better from day 1.
Sorry but neutering will not sort this problem only consistent training will. She needs to keep on with the training.
I think she needs to train him and fix him…both wont hurt.
If she cant get her dog to behave she absolutely shouldn’t stud him out.
She needs to do both, neither one’s going to fix the problem on his own.
Neuter and train.
I think you should just re-train him.Take him out and tell him to go poddie. Then tell him good boy when he goes.
do not give him to much food
Well there is a spray out there that you spray on the spot where they go and then the smell to the dogs is bad so they don’t go there. soon enough he will be trained. or if you don’t wanna waste the money because of the economy then when they go you take the dog and put there nose close to the spot and then scold them. they will learn not to go to the bathroom in the house because they wanna please the owner. When dealing with the diapers I would get a cover to put over the trash can and then if the dog pushes it over they could hear it and take action right away and the dog will again want to please the owner and stop eventually. These training tips don’t take very long for the dog to soak in. we used the bathroom one on my dog and it worked.
For the right and wrong thing you are right about training but they need to get the dog neutered too. they need to get neutered so they are more relaxed. (Apparently they get a lot of stress put on them for looking at other dogs lol.)
Hope I helped!!!
I have a one year old chihuahua and it’s not as easy training them but it can be done.first your sister need to keep him by her side so he don’t get into stuff she can leash him and crate training does work thats were my dog sleeps at night in a dog carrier so he don’t wonder around the house making and pooping.one time mine peed on my leg I was not very happy he went staight to his bed these sites that well help your sister on the training thing all together thing and make sure shes not feeding him after 6 that well help.
heres one link just google that might helphttp://www.essortment.com/hobbies/trainw…
Get him neutered this will help with the pee and marking people and also calm him down..Is your sister home to train him??is he crated when they leave?? These are things she has to do is first get him fixed and also start all over again with taking him out on a regular basis..Also sounds like a baby is in the picture and he might be a little jeolous as he is’nt getting the attention he use to get..The poo is an issue either he is’nt getting the proper food and they are just lying there for him to get to..This is’nt healthy and can cause serious illness..She must stop that behavior right away
Getting him neutered will not help with the peeing, it will just make him ‘hump-crazy’ so good luck with that idea. Well. I recommend having the dirty diapers be put directly in the out-door trash as soon as possible. that way when the dog gets in the trash he will have nothing to eat. For the peeing and pooping in the house. Get a scedual and bring him out every 3 hours. Bring him out RIGHT in the morning and before he is put in his crate at night. Also, always let him out through the same door every day so that he will eventually learn to go right to that door and barking once so that the owner knows that the dog needs to go out. That is what my doggies do. Good luck!
