Keep him up wiht what he is used to, although you can probably forego the crate for maybe a dog pen that he can run around in. It does not seem like a bad way to go,, and at five years old, house training him is going to be MUCH more difficult then it wills be for a puppy. Just make sure that he ALWAYS has access to fresh water, food, and shelter from the elements, especially as he ages, you want to make sure he stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
