Is A Brown Spot On A West Highland White Terrier Normal?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I have a westie she is about 8 months old. When I got her hair cut the last time I noticed she has a brown spot right on the beginning of her tail. When her hair is long you can not see it. I didn’t think this is normal because they are white terries. Can any one help me out on this?

despite the name, westies don’t come in just white. they come in all variations of it, including a pale wheat color. it’s not an acceptable color for the breed, but it does happen. if it is just a fur discoloration, it doesn’t mean she’s not purebred…i’d suspect she’s just not a very well-bred dog by a reputable breeder.http://www.canadawestieclub.ca/westies/F…
if, however, it looks like the skin is involved at all, it could just be a pigmentation, but you’ll want to get it checked out by a vet to rule out any bacterial infections or other dermatological concerns.
edit: having AKC papers (& thus being purebred) don’t mean she’s of a high-quality breeding by a reputable & responsible breeder. it just guarantees that her parents were both purebred as well. don’t know if this is a thought or not, but if she’s not of the quality that the breed standard calls for in order to better the breed, i wouldn’t suggest breeding her. it would breed her “inferior” color & style down to the next generation. she’s still going to make a GREAT pet, but not necessarily be good breeding material.
She must not be purebred.
it’s not normal if they told you she was purebred.
Is the spot on her skin or is the fur a different color? Sometimes purebred Westies can have apricot in their fur (although for show dogs it’s not desirable). If it’s on the skin it’s probably just a pigment spot, which is also normal. My Westie Poodle mix has some freckles on her skin. Just make sure it isn’t raised and abnormal looking.

Is it that the hair is brown or the skin?
If it is the hair then she probably isnt a purebred.
If it is on the skin then it is just skin pigmentation. Just like you having a freckle!
All Westies are solid white.Evidently she isn’t a purebred like you was told. The Westies run in the same catagory as the Scottish Terrier,so she may have some Scottish Terrier in her and will still look like a Westie,as a Westie is known to be the only pure White Scottish Terrier known.
Ask your vet!I have a Westie 14 months and I don’t think she has any brown patches!Good luck!
