I’m not really an expert on dogs, but i heard that you should cover your floors with newspaper and gradually take one or a couple pieces away every day or something……….
My boarder collie took 2 days my poodle (He was my first dog) took about a month. It’s all to do with the dog and the amount of time you’re willing to put in. It seems you’re doing it all right so I think a month at most.
Two punts, one free throw.
Be patient…you will realize how long after eating to take him out…don’t play with him when you are taking him potty…this is “business” time and he needs to know that. When he does go praise him…they want to please…make sure to use a key word every time he does his business (so that, eventually, he will recognize the word as a potty word and go when told) and reward with a treat and enthusiasm. Always take him out after long periods of play or chewing. Familiarize yourself with the way he acts when he has to go out, a clue of some kind that will alert you to take him potty. Be consistant! I have three and this has worked well…usually trained by 4-6 mos.
GOOD LUCK!!!!
depends on the dog itself, not the breed, to trainmy puppy (shih-tzu) i put down nappy pads (buy them at pet stores for dogs) at back door and he was to go on them. i then started after a week or so to move the nappy otu the back door and he started to learn to go to the back door and scratch to get our attention to go onto the pad.
we took the pad away after about 6 weeks.
he peed in the same spotwhere it used to be outside.
if he did pee indoors we pushed his nose to it and told him off.
if he peed on the nappy pad we gave him loads of love and treats and carried him and cuddled him for a good 5 minutes.
he learned pretty quick =]
I have a lab boxer mix. hyper and smart as well. You really have to watch your dog. Take your dog out every hour on the hour to avoid going on your carpet use a timer. I used the timer on my microwave. The vet said if you take her out and you know its about time to go and the dog wont go put the dog in the cage for 10 min and try again. If still nothing put dog in cage for 15 min. Eventually your dog knows outside is the only place to go. I think about 3 4 months of this will be enough for him to learn. Good luck.
With all due respect, if you need to ask such a basic question of your dog, then perhaps there is much more about keeping a dog that you need to learn. I suggest you consult with you vet, then purchase a couple good books on dog training, so you can not only potty train your dog, but teach it other valuable lessons as well, like sit, stay, come, down, etc. I think Westies are excellent animals and will reward you with love for all it’s life.
