How Can We Stop Our Westie From Barking – We Have Tried All The Products, But They Don’t Have Any Effect?

We have tried sprays, noises, plug ins, and reward but with no success. Has anyone got a solution please – mainly she barks when a squirrel comes into the garden, at just about all birds, and trees being blown by the wind. This causes her to get very stressed. Even the vet can’t suggest anything else other than going back to training classes. Any sensible ideas would be welcome. She is as good as gold at any other time,.

sigh…Early training and adequate attention would have lessened the chance of the obnoxious barking. It is possible stilll though, simply never let them keep on barking, and her into the house, and put her into a crae until she gets quiet. Just like putting a child in a “time out.” This breed, descended from working terriers, has a lot of energy, tenacity, and aggression towards its prey (hence the barking), which was originally the rabbit and other, smaller animals such as squirrels. They are always alert and consider themselves guard dogs, although their size prevents them from providing any real intimidation. They are very possessive of their belongings, master and food so beware of this. These terriers generally require 13 hours of sleep out of every 24, Thank God…
Westies will usually conform to the sleep patterns of their human companions, and take several naps during the day as well, to their needed sleep. Since they are independent, they can withstand moderate periods of time being alone, which is probably what she wants and is cranky and fussing about it some of the time. So you have tried the plug in Phermone thingys… And no effect huh? Have you tried a pet calming pill? They are only temporary as all things you have tried are (and take a while to kick in) but a least it helps. Other than that, she is just being as the breed is meant to be. A typical energetic Terrier. It sounds like your going to have to keep the little girl busy and entertained so she doesn’t have the chance to barkand get her way…its your way not hers….you be the boss and take charge. You can do it!

no shock collar!! cruel and inhaumane.its a working dog and bored,it needs lots of exercise and playtime,you could try one of those wind-up chase toys,sometimes thats works.
No. No shock collars. I don’t think you would like to be shocked for something that is your instinct, would you?
Teach you dog the “quiet” command. With persistancy. If she barks, to her quiet and if she even stops to take a breathe, give her a treat. She’ll catch on after a while.
If I was your next door neighbour I would suggest a lead pellet behind its ear.
Shock collar. Thats the only thing that stops my dog’s excessive barking. Only put it on when they are going crazy and won’t listen to commands, they do need to bark sometimes.
no shock collar or peanut butter dogs can die from eating nuts. You can buy a collar for your dog that sprays bitter tasting liquid in to her mouth every time she barks But for me the best way is to go to training classes.

tell him quiet and then ignore him. when he (envetually!) stops praise him like mad, give him a treat and tell him he is a good boy for being quiet. If you ignore bad behaviour and reward good, they discover it is much more fun to be good and please you
i say get her neutered it completely quietened 2 of our dogs with similar behavioural problems either that or if shes just young shes still got some crazy puppy in her that she should just grow out of takes patience good luck
