How Can I Prevent My Dog From Peeing When He Gets Excited???

well i have finally potty trained my westie…. well, almost. lately he has been peeing when he gets excited. when people he doesnt know approach him, or when i come home from work. and he learned how to sit on command. and he knows that he gets a treat if he sits, so now he pees everytime i say sit, beacuse hes excited about the treat… i took him to the vet and its not a medical thing. help me! what can i do. he knows better, and i know he doesnt do it on purpose, so i cant scold him…

If I were you I would stop all treats. It’s good you’ve consulted a doctor and ruled out medical concerns like urinary tract infection. I don’t know what method you used to potty train–if you used a crate, I’d say go backwards and start over. If he doesn’t have a crate, get him one. Contact a trainer and learn how to crate train. It sounds like he should be in the crate when you come home, he won’t pee on himself in there probably. Wait for him to calm down in there before you let him out, and take him outside immediately. Since you have ruled out medical concerns like a weak bladder, I wonder if your dog has enough chances during the day to empty his bladder–if he is a puppy he needs more chances than an adult dog would. Just like people, if his bladder is full when he gets real excited, he might lose control. See if you can take him out a few times more than you do now, and use the crate method. (Learn about crating, do it right and it will be a great thing…) Good luck.

Well, try rewarding the dog with something other than food. Maybe, a new chew toy etc… Whenever he pees you need to make it clear that it is very wrong. Dogs dont have a very good memory span, so you have to do it right away. If you keep this persistent, your dog will understand that it is wrong. You dont need to scold him just let him no that its wrong.

did you hear yourself I cant scold him he doesnt know better. all dogs know when to go pee and its not in the house. This is a bad behavior and with that attitude your not going to help him if you dont tell him no bad dog for peeing in the house hes going to think its a good thing and keep doing it. believe me my dog does it and when I say AHHH NO! he stops peeing and looks at me and sits. because he knows its wrong in the house!

It’s not that he’s excited, that is subservient behaviour.
I have a doxie that still does that, and she is 15 years old.
It is not a Doxie thing, none of my other Doxies have ever done this. I’ve had 8 over my lifetime so far, plus three rescues.

Actually you can’t stop the dog from peeing when it gets excited. Better to consult it to your another vet , because it may have some disease. As long as he’s ok…
    I hope this helps

My pup still does too. When someone he likes comes over he dribbles because he gets so excited. I try to make sure he goes out to pee before company comes over. I know he doesn’t know he is doing it. I’ve heard there are certain breeds that are known to do it. I just mop it up if there is an accident because he is potty trained and does let me know hes gotta go out to take care of his business.
