House Training Westie To Use Litterbox?

I adopted a 7mth old Westie mix from the shelter about 3 weeks ago. I would like to train him to use the litter box (w/ newspaper in it) so he can still go to the toilet when I’m at work but nothing has worked. I’ve tried following the advice of many website like putting in a limited space but he refuses to go in the litter box and he just sits in it. I’ve also tried buying a spray so that when he smells it he supposedly will go there but it failed. He’s ripped the housetraining pads whether it’s in the litter box or it’s hidden between the papers. I NEED HELP…

what i did was pick him up and put his favorite treat in front of his name and say potty over and over again. in a litter box, puppy pads whatever works i taught him to go to the litter box because he would always get fleas when he went outside.
my dog actually did use it it was a miracle.
don’t forget to give him a treat when he does use it and repeat it every time he uses it in the floor give him a spank on his butt when he uses it on the floor.
    good luck

Forget about the litterbox. Train him properly with a crate to go outside.
Pads and papers are also useless.

litter training a dog can be frustrating but I have found that placing a piece of the dog doo in the box helps.also when you do take him outside to reilve himself take the box with and so he starts to relate the two.this has worked for me and I have 4 pomeranians litter box trained now. hope it helps

You might want to try crate training. How long are your work days? A dog walker may help the transition. Do you live in an apartment or house? I would never suggest leaving him unsupervised in the house or the yard. Remember this is a baby and every person that has raised dogs successfully for any period of time suggests crating your dog.
I think the litter box idea is not gonna work out like you had hopes. If you insist that he potty indoors and don’t crate train than I would try buying sod and placing it in the litter box. This still may not work but if you do not have easy access to outdoors than it may save you some trips.

I don’t know how big a westie is, but you may just have to kennel train it. I started litter training my pom at 5 weeks of age and still had troubles. She uses the doggy diapers in the litter box because she ate any kind of litter that I purchased. At 7 months, I am not sure you can train it. If you kennel train it, it will not potty in the kennel, then when you come home or it is time to pee, make her use the box. maybe if you do it on a leash, she will get the idea. Or maybe you could put some litter down in her favorite pee place outside and after she makes it dirty, scoop it up and put it in the litter box. Gosh, I just don’t know.

Judging from whatever you already know of that your pet considers a treat that you’d give it … When it does things that you do’nt think it should !?! Or that’s BAD.. Take away a previlage or treat!?! Say for instance put it on a leash in the basement for a different amount of time each`time!! & when you feel it’s time to let them be free TIE them up out`side awile !!I guess until you feel a lesson was learned !?! Or you feel it gets the idea of whatever you’re trying to get it to understand !?! Then let it roam free !! But try to follow that schedule for about a week so it will get used to doing things at certain times !?! like going to the bathroom OUTSIDE !?! .,. get it .?. “R”r`r,r’->

Dogs don’t use cat litter boxes. Buy him a crate and stick him in that for a few hours while you’re gone. If you have already housebroken him, he won’t need the litter box and depending on how long you’re gone, will most likely be able to hold it until you allow him outside.

these things have worked for me:
scratch his front feet in the sand for him a few times
    or
try a different kind of litter ie. scoopable, good mews (the pellets made out of paper),
ripped up news paper, dirt from out side, sand
I’ve had different personalities take to different stuff
