awwwww…i wish i could say i knew, but great choice for a dog! ive had my westie for 5 years and she is so smart and fun, and very cute. (even at 5 years old) shes funny she must think that my dad watches too much tv, she (witness account from my mom) takes the remote off the coffee table, drops it on the floor and pushes it under the couch, and dad gets mad because he cant find the remote. You will enjoy your westie, they are awesome smart little dogs, and they are fast learners, and very loyal.

What ever you do, do not — repeat, do not buy a puppy farm Westie from a Pet store. They will tell you it is from a “reputable breeder,” but that is truly rare.
If you are interested in the Westie, you need to find the best bred one possible. Why? Good breeders try to breed out of the line the weaknesses that Westie tend to have.
I have not yet met a person who bought a Westie from a Pet Store who either did not have major health issues or only had the pet live up to nine years. The average life length of a decently bred Westie is from 15 to 20, with 16 to 18 years average!
There’s nothing worse than losing your pet early.
Also, people complain about Westie skin problems. What they don’t realize is the more you shampoo a Westie, the worse the problem(s) get!. Wash the furnishings (skirt, legs, feet and the backside and face) but leave the body alone!
We have five Westies and have had for many years. One of our boys is a best in show and a Eukunuba winner, so this is as good advise as you can get. Most people, including vets, really don’t know or understand the breed well enough to give advise, so most of it is guess-work.
Your Westie is a pack dog, so he needs company. He’s extremely clever and an excellent hunter of vermin, including Badgers. He likes to run and have fun, so if you live alone or no one is home with him most of the day, the Westie is not the dog for you.
Yes, he gets allegies (most often food allegies or from too much bathing the body), so keep his/her food simple and good and fresh. Fruit and veg are the correct snacks, and NEVER, never give them Greenies! Hope this clears up a lot of nonsense you will see written about Westies!
Where do you find a well bred Westie? Go to the AKC, find the Westie breed information, then follow the information to the breeders. Even when you see them, make sure you check around for evaluation of the breeders, such as at your local Westie Club in the State where you live. If they haven’t heard of the breeder(s), be cautious.
