Can My Puppy Be Trained???

I have a 9 week old Westie and she has been trying our patience….she is biting everything in sight (including us!), she hasn’t gotten the potty training down, and now she all of a sudden has discovered her voice and barks at everything. She stays in a puppy proofed room that has her bed, food, and an area for potty, but as soon as we get home, we let her out to the living room, where we supervise her. I think this is what’s confusing her because when she’s in the room she pottys just fine, it’s just when we let her in the living room that she doesn’t know where to go. We haven’t taught her to go outside because she’s still to young and we’re not there during the day. Also, we’re not sure if she can go outside yet and walk around since she’s not fully vaccintated. We love her but we are new to this and need help!!

Your best bet as from your question you have not done this before, or quite know how to handle it is to sign up for a few lessons at a local pet school (sometimes there are individuals in the community who do lessons too, check the ads in the paper), 9 weeks might be a lil young but ask them.
If the puppy is being left alone during the day it will feel lonely and frustrated… get her vaccinated as soon as is possible… don’t pamper it too much (especially doing training)… be calm… if you go around screeming when something happens the puppy will get excited and play up more… sound coordinated trainig works well…. a short disturbing for bad behavior, and a clicker to signal treat for good behavior…
Remember you are the pack leader you need to maintain that position at all times, make sure the puppy knows it’s at the bottom (It is not a human)

PLEASE DO NOT HIT YOUR DOG! Yes you can train a puppy, you have to be consistent. 9 weeks old she is still a baby. I recommend taking her out every 3 to 4 hours, then when she goes tell her what a good girl, bring her back in the house.
there bladders are small, just like baby’s even at night I suggest taking her out a couple of times. As time goes on extended it an hour or so. Good Luck!

yes, just correct the bad behavior.
When she potties all over it means she excited. Put her on her leash and take her outside to potty before she can greet the family(pack), you also might want to consider a crate. Dogs are den animals and ont go in their crate. It also trains them to learn hold it longer.
When she bites, hold her by the neck (hand in the form of a mouth) and place her down on her side and tell her NO in a firm and assertive voice(mother dogs do this. the gentle biting part, not the saying no part…) keep placing your hand in front of her and correcting her and she’ll get the picture. bitter apple spray from the pet store works as a good addition to the training too.
As for the barking….Find out what triggers it and confront it. If you have a correction leash, use it. When she barks, give a little quick jerk on the leash accompanied by a NO or a Shh sound.(dont call her name when it comes to correcting behavior, if you do it will be seen as a negative thing and when you call her for any reason, she’ll be reluctant to come, so use a noise instead)
it’s all about rules, boundaries and limitations.
Repetion is the key. The more you do it, the more she’ll understand and stop the bad behaviour.
On top of that, dont feel bad when she whimpers and whines. Its just because she wants to have her way.
    Be the pack leader.

Yes, you puppy can be trained. She is only 9 weeks old, so you are going to have to be patient with her. Routine is the key. Are you having her go to the bathroom on puppy pads in her room? If so, make sure there are some in the living room. You may need to limit the amount of room she has in the living room until she understands where to go to the bathroom. Puppies are just like babies and will have accidents, chew things, and yes, bark with they find their voice. BE PATIENT!
Clear and to the point training will produce results with time. You may want to invest in a puppy training book and read through it and refer back to it when needed.

Yes, your puppy can be trained up to 16 weeks, that is when they think they have learned everything (like a teenager). If you use pee pads it is a good idea to put one in two rooms, especially the one they stay in the most. My puppy would not go in the kitcehn unless I was in there so she would go in the living room. I had to eventually put down a pee pad in there and she did just fine. As far as bitting, they will grow out of it, my did. I would give her a chew toy anytime she started to chew on anything she wasn’t suppost to. Give it time, I know it is hard, but they will grow out of it and you will love them even more.

a lot of people find this to be cruel, but a lot of people recommend it… try crating the dog. find a cage that has space–but not too big. it will help the potty training, because dogs learn not to pee where they have to sleep.(in your case, the room just might be too big a space.) i did it with my dog, and she was trained in two weeks. when she had to pee, she learned to make noise, and we’d take her out. it also helped the chewing anf biting. if she did those things, we put her in the crate–not to be mean to her, but so that she learned that we wouldn’t play with her if she bit or chewed. she didn’t like notbeing near us, and learned quickly. now she has full run of the house, and hasn’t bitten or chewed, or peed inappropriately in YEARS. we’ve had her since she was 6 weeks. i don’t know how you feel about the crate idea, like i said, some find it cruel, and i can see why. but i do have a fairly well trained dog that did just fine with it.

OK, you are going to have to get really serious if you really want this to work. No guilt!!! Every time the puppy barks, swat it’s nose with a paper or spray bitter apple in its mouth. (you can get bitter apple at any pet store or make your own = cider vinegar & water) On the biting issue: Swat her nose, or get her items that she can chew on. Puppies chew! Potty training: Any time she wets on the floor, immediatly say “No”, take her over to the pee spot, rub her nose in it, swat on behind and take her outside. Set her down and tell her this is where she goes. If she squates, praise her. If she did not do it in front of you, you should not punish her. Make sure you take her out on regular intervals to potty. And praise her like you never praised her before if she does what you want. They are never too young to learn to potty outside. Put her on a leash if you are afraid she will trot away. Even if she does not have all her vaccines, she should learn to potty outside. Just don’t let her snif other pets’ pooh or poles where boy dogs pee. You can do this, but you need a little tough love. Treat her like a dog first and then you can love and snuggle after she has pleased you.

No offense, but are you kidding? Of course she can be trained. She is just at the age when it is okay to leave her mother. She is going to have annoying habits for awhile (biting, going potty in the house, etc.) but you have to be patient with her. If you aren’t, she’ll never learn.
