cookies....lots and lots of cookies. I started out with cookies and as soon as she did what she was supposed to, I gave her one. After she knew what she was supposed to do, I started extending the length of time she had to do something by 5 seconds. If I was teaching her down, I made her stay down for maybe 5-10 seconds before I gave her the cookie. Westies distract easily so cookies are usually the best way to start. From the very start though, I always used hand signals (the hand with the cookie) along with the command, because there may be times when you want your dog to do something, but can't really say anything at that particular moment. Also, stay consistant with your commands. Sit, Sit down, and down are three totally different commands to my westie. Be patient when training, westies distract easily and are very stubborn. That's just the way the breed is.
