Are There Any Drawbacks To Owning A Westie?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I am thinking of getting a West Highland White Terrier. If any of you have any experience with them, is there anything about them that you’ve found undesireable? Are they nippy, hyper, etc? This would not be my first dog, so I know how to train them, etc.

They’re WHITE!!!!
and..there is LOTZ of junk out there! Be *REALLY* careful! Skin trouble abounds, bad size, coat, etc.
Yuck,try Cairn instead!!
& yeah,I’ve met (& groomed) LOTZ of em.
I have groomed many Westies. They are terriers so they are high energy. The temperment depends on the breeding. NEVER buy any dog from a pet store. Make sure the breeder is reputable and ask for testimonies from customers.
Also Westies need to be groomed often. So you need to figure that into how much time you are willing to soend brushing him. He will need professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Check local prices.
they do tend to be stubbrn, and are not usually great with small children..However, with proper training and socialization, they can be wonderful companions.. My aunt was absolutely crazy about hers..but, he wasn’t safe with chldren. He was food aggressive, and she thought that was funny…He was pretty spoiled…lol

Possible faults include: Excess timidity or excess pugnacity. If you want a cuddly lapdog, a Westie may not be the right breed for you. Many are too independent to be held for long periods. They are “earth dogs” and do like to dig.
Good luck!
